The pursuit of stolen footwear reached an end in northern Arizona as the police chase ended near the state line with California. According to FOX 10 Phoenix, a robbery on Thursday, targeting a train carrying Nike shoes, initiated a law enforcement response that spanned 80 miles. The heist is the latest in a string of train robberies that have seen possibly millions of dollars in Nike goods taken from stopped trains after thieves allegedly cut hose lines to engage emergency brakes.
During the event, two vehicles were pulled over by the Hualapai Nation Police Department in connection with the robberies. In a failed attempt to flee, one of the vehicles was stopped and found to contain eight individuals, while the second vehicle led authorities on a high-speed pursuit that eventually concluded near the California-Arizona border. The driver, a woman whose identity was not released, and her male passenger were arrested at the scene. They are reported to have been in the U.S. illegally, according to 12News.
The suspects had targeted freight trains in the Arizona deserts, where they are believed to have stolen more than $2 million worth of new Nike sneakers. This includes pairs that hadn't even reached the retail market yet. On Thursday, as police pulled over an SUV suspected of being involved in the robberies, eight people ran from the scene. Authorities were able to detain the male driver and recover Nike shoes found near the vehicle.
