Chaos unfolded on the streets of downtown Los Angeles late Monday evening as suspects led police on a high-speed pursuit involving two allegedly stolen vehicles – a situation that ended with one individual detained and others at large.
The episode began when at least one individual commandeered a Kia Optima while another was seen driving a Kia Soul, as reported by KTLA. After a brief stint in the Optima, the suspects converged in the black Soul, ditching the first vehicle. They careened through the veins of L.A.’s road network, from surface streets to the freeway system, joined by the California Highway Patrol just before the clock struck 11 p.m.
In a desperate bid to evade capture, the suspects abandoned the black Kia in the neighborhood of South Vermont and West 49th, scattering on foot. "At least three of the suspects jumped out of the car," according to KTLA. The pursuit turned vertical as one individual was seen scaling a fence and, subsequently, a roof.
Aerial footage from Sky5 later showed the chase intensifying, with suspects leaping over barriers in an escalating cat-and-mouse game with law enforcement. Eventually, one suspect's run ended at the base of a fence – unable to follow the others over – and was apprehended, NBC Los Angeles detailed. Meanwhile, the whereabouts or the status of the remaining suspects remain unclear.
The Los Angeles Police Department has not yet disclosed if the remaining suspects have been caught following the tumultuous events of the night.
