A high-speed chase involving a suspect on a motorcycle ended with an arrest in rural Calaveras County, after law enforcement agencies coordinated to halt a dramatic evasion. According to a Facebook post by the Calaveras County Sheriff's Office, the incident unfolded on the night of February 25th when a deputy tried to stop a black motorcycle on Reeds Turnpike near Copper Town Square for a non-functioning taillight.
The suspect, later identified as Jacob Schulte, refused to stop and attempted to quickly outpace the deputy. What ensued was a chase across Highway 4 onto Hodson Road, with the motorcycle's speed hitting the 80 miles per hour mark. Schulte was recklessly driving in opposite lanes and, upon reaching stretches of residential roads, his speedometer still pushed boundaries upwards of 90 miles per hour. The Calaveras County Sheriff's Office reported the motorcycle, "maneuvered through traffic barriers," making it temporarily impossible for the deputy to continue the pursuit.
The chase drew in additional law enforcement participants with both ground and aerial units contributing to the apprehension of the suspect. Units from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and an aviation unit from the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office joined efforts to track Schulte. Eventually CHP officers located the motorcycle in Tuolumne County, but the pursuit was far from over as Schulte returned into Calaveras County, leading towards the Copper Meadows subdivision, as reported by the Calaveras County Sheriff's Office.
With aerial assistance reporting Schulte's movements, law enforcement tracked him to a property where he opted to hide in an unlikely refuge—a chicken coop. "The suspect was instructed to exit the chicken coop and follow the officers' directions," as per the Calaveras County Sheriff's Office statement. Complying without further resistance, Schulte was arrested. Not only was he found to have been evading an officer with wanton disregard for safety but was also carrying 3.4 grams of methamphetamine. His extensive list of charges reflect the severity of the episode and include multiple felonies related to evasion, controlled substance possession with priors, and traffic violations.
Following the arrest, Schulte was booked at the Calaveras County Jail. His attempt to escape law enforcement spanned multiple roads, posed dangers to the public, and showcased the multi-agency coordination essential in such high-stakes scenarios. The pursuit and consequent capture underscore the risk and unpredictability that officers face in their commitment to uphold public safety in our communities.
