The USS Texas, known for its storied past as the last World War I dreadnought battleship, has finally anchored its future at Pier 15 in Galveston. The Galveston Wharves Board of Trustees ended over a year of speculation and indecision when they confirmed the permanent mooring site for the historic vessel. The announcement followed the conclusion of the ship's extensive repair period, which had it docked from August 2022 till March 2024, as reported by CW39.
A significant concern, placed at the forefront by Galveston's maritime community, strongly influenced the board's decision. The safety of the channel and the preservation of the ship from potential storm damage were paramount, a sentiment echoed by Vice Chairman Jeff Patterson. "The two main considerations for this location were really the safety of the channel — that was the driving force that we heard from pilots from the Coast Guard and from the Corps of Engineers," Patterson told Houston Public Media. Misplaced modifier: During a board meeting last week to protect this ship from storms, there are some details that still need to be ironed out, but Jeff Patterson announced that the vessel would be staying in Galveston.
Financial worries for local residents were also laid to rest with the assurance that state funding and resources from the Battleship Texas Foundation would be entirely responsible for the ship's mooring expenses. "I'd also just like to say to the public that there are no port funds that are being used to move the Battleship Texas here," Patterson said, reassuring taxpayers that the relocation costs would not fall on them, as stated by Houston Public Media.
Upon securing the ship's new berth, the Battleship Texas Foundation shared their enthusiasm on social media, anticipating an influx of tourism and educational opportunities. Misplaced modifier: Shared in an Instagram post by the foundation shortly after the vote, "Big news for Battleship Texas! After years of hard work and dedication, we're thrilled to have the support of the Wharves Board to bring TEXAS to Pier 15 in Galveston- just a short walk from Pier 21 and the historic Galveston Strand," highlighting the location's proximity to other attractions. The foundation looks forward to "promote tourism, educate future generations, and create a visitor experience worthy of her crew and legacy," as per Houston Public Media.
