A Honduran national, Alex Salomon Reyes-Chavez, aged 45, has been given a two-year prison sentence for illegally entering the United States after having been previously deported, as disclosed in an announcement from Acting U.S. Attorney Michael M. Simpson. Reyes-Chavez faced the charges under Title 8, United States Code, Section 1326(a), and was sentenced by United States District Court Judge Sarah D. Vance, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Louisiana.
Following deportation on March 5, 2012, Reyes-Chavez was arrested in Louisiana on June 30, 2023, by the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office on charges of theft and the illegal possession of stolen items. Following this incident, he was arrested again on October 24, 2023, by federal authorities when he left a courthouse in Gretna, Louisiana. The history of Reyes-Chavez includes previous convictions: on July 14, 2010, he received a four-year sentence for heroin possession in Texas, and on April 27, 2007, for grand theft in Florida, he served almost six months in jail.
In praising the investigative efforts, Acting U.S. Attorney Michael M. Simpson credited the successful outcome to the work of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), according to the official statement. The case was spearheaded by Assistant U.S. Attorney Carter K.D. Guice, Jr. of the General Crimes Unit.
