A hiker was rescued from the Nākoa Trail in Kahana Valley thanks to the swift response of the Honolulu Fire Department. Last Saturday, HFD received a call at 12:42 p.m. about a female hiker in her 30s suffering from an illness while hiking.
According to a press release posted on the official Honolulu Fire Department's website, firefighters were dispatched with five units, totaling 14 personnel. They arrived at the scene at 1:11 p.m., setting up operations to help the distressed hiker. The hiker's condition required them to be airlifted from the spot, which was otherwise inaccessible for a safe descent given her medical status.
With the help of Air 1, HFD personnel reached the incapacitated hiker and provided the necessary assistance to secure her transfer. As the hiker was airlifted to a nearby landing zone, the Emergency Medical Services took over her care at approximately 1:50 p.m., ensuring she received professional medical treatment promptly.
The rescue operation highlights the crucial role that emergency services play in responding to incidents within the island's popular hiking trails. As such incidents can arise unexpectedly, the preparedness and efficiency of rescue teams are essential components of outdoor safety.
