In response to significant structural concerns, the Ahihi Street footbridge has been closed indefinitely by the City and County of Honolulu's Department of Design and Construction (DDC). The deteriorating infrastructure, which dates back to 1975, poses a threat to pedestrian safety, prompting the city to take immediate action. A recent evaluation revealed the metal railings of the bridge were severely corroded, leading to the collapse of the transverse metal supports beneath the footbridge deck, according to Hawaii News Now.
The DDC has warned against using the bridge or the surrounding stream embankment to cross Kamanaiki Stream, as well as against loitering in the area, and along with the installation of signs and barricades, they have prohibited entry to prevent accidents and further mishaps. Students from Kalihi Uka Elementary School and their parents have been advised to find different routes for traveling to and from school, particularly since a hazardous one-foot gap has opened between the deck and railing at the Nihi Street end of the bridge, Spectrum Local News reported.
While no timeline has been set for repairs or replacement, the indefinite closure serves as a reminder of the fragile state of aging infrastructure and the essential role of regular maintenance and assessment to avoid potential hazards. The city has not yet commented on plans or funding for repairing or replacing the bridge. Concerned residents or those seeking additional information about the closure can reach out to the DDC at their contact number, (808) 768-8400.
