Houston is preparing for a city-wide hiring freeze starting Monday. A recent audit by Ernst and Young revealed that Houston has the most employees per capita compared to other major cities. Mayor John Whitmire's administration plans to reduce the city's workforce to improve efficiency and cut costs. According to KHOU 11, Whitmire said, "Some of the departments need better services. Our solid waste, our garbage pickup. We believe the savings from this will allow us to improve public services."
Houston’s weather is sunny and warm, but the city is about to freeze hiring and pause any new hiring decisions, as per the National Weather Service. Mayor Whitmire believes this will improve city services, not hurt them. Public safety departments like the police and fire services are exempt from the freeze, so they will remain strong.
The audit's findings, which sparked this policy shift, revealed inefficiencies in supervision, with 40 percent of supervisors overseeing three or fewer employees. This imbalance has spurred local government to take a long, hard look at how the city is structured. "Houston has many great, hardworking employees, but the efficiency study indicated that there are too many for an organization the size of the city," city officials stated, as reported by KHOU.
