A 50-year-old woman, Sonia Guadalupe Cesar Ponce, tragically lost her life in a vehicular collision last yesterday afternoon in Iredell County. The incident, which took place around 4:50 p.m. at the intersection of Old Mocksville Road and Jane Sowers Road near Statesville, involved Ponce's eastbound 2000 Saturn and a southbound 2011 Ford F-150, as reported by WCNC.
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Ponce was attempting to make a left turn from Jane Sowers Road onto Old Mocksville Road at the stop sign when her vehicle was struck by the Ford truck. WSOC-TV reported that the driver of the Ford was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries following the crash.
Further details from WBTV revealed that the initial investigation by troopers concluded that neither impairment nor speed appeared to be contributing factors to the fatal crash. As a result, no charges have been filed at this time.
The accident led to an extended road closure as authorities conducted their on-scene investigation, causing significant traffic delays in the area. While the community mourns the unforeseen passing of Sonia Guadalupe Cesar Ponce, the State Highway Patrol's investigation into the precise circumstances of the collision continues.
