A Jacksonville man with a history of felony convictions has been handed a federal prison sentence for unlawful firearm possession. Jonathan Scott Thompson, 45, will serve 33 months following a sentencing by U.S. District Judge Brian J. Davis. In a plea agreement from December last year, Thompson admitted to the charge stemming from an incident in March 2024.
The situation unraveled when police were summoned to a domestic disturbance where Thompson was reportedly seen assaulting a woman. Court documents, obtained from a U.S. Attorney's Office press release, detail that officers discovered a loaded Glock semi-automatic pistol in the vehicle where the altercation took place. It was a measurable offense for Thompson, already barred from possessing firearms due to his criminal record, to even hold the weapon.
The case highlights Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and making communities safer. The PSN initiative, since its revitalization in 2021, has been focusing on building trust within communities, backing organizations that work on violence prevention, setting smart enforcement priorities, and tracking the outcomes.
Thompson's sentence also includes the forfeiture of his interest in the Glock pistol. This decisive action comes as part of a collaborative effort between the Jacksonville Beach Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant United States Attorney Rachel Lasry prosecuted the case, putting a spotlight on the ongoing commitment to "make our neighborhoods safer for everyone," as put forward by the Department of Justice in their recent statement.
