An officer-involved shooting in Jacksonville's San Jose neighborhood has claimed the life of 28-year-old Alquan Suydam following a confrontation with police. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office released a statement on social media detailing the events leading up to the shooting, which occurred after Suydam allegedly assaulted his pregnant girlfriend and then drew a pistol on responding officers.
According to the sheriff's office, the incident began two days prior when a domestic dispute involving an armed Suydam was reported. Officers responded, but the suspect had fled. Yesterday evening, around 7:45 p.m., another call was made about a similar disturbance involving the same individuals. It was reported that Suydam punched his pregnant girlfriend in the stomach before arming himself. Upon arrival, officers found Suydam in his car and ordered him to show his hands after he started to walk with them concealed in his pockets. The confrontation escalated as Suydam pulled out a gun, at which point, "The officers shot him multiple times," the sheriff's office stated. Suydam received medical aid at the scene before being transported to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. No officers were injured during the encounter.
Further details of the shooting were shared by Undersheriff Shawn Coarsey and Chief Alan Parker, identifying the officers involved as J. Shirk, C. Duhon, and C. Melton. A photo of the gun Suydam reportedly brandished was released in the comments of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office post on the matter.
This event marks the fifth officer-involved shooting this year in Jacksonville. Investigations are being conducted by the State Attorney’s Office, followed by an internal one by the sheriff's office. The investigations aim to bring clarity and justice regarding the circumstances of Suydam's death.
