Residents of Jefferson Parish will have the opportunity to learn more about the three millage renewals on the upcoming May 3, 2025 ballot during two information sessions. According to the Jefferson Parish government's announcement, the first session is scheduled for Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at the West Bank Regional Library in Harvey. The following evening, another session will take place at the East Bank Regional Library in Metairie. Both sessions are set to begin at 6 p.m. and will be accessible online through various Jefferson Parish platforms.
On the ballot, voters will find a Drainage Millage Renewal, which is crucial for the Drainage Department's operating budget. A renewal would not exceed 6 mills and is projected to generate $27 million annually. These funds contribute to the maintenance of over 340 miles of drainage canals, 1,465 miles of subsurface drainage, and 72 pump stations. The relevance of this renewal extends to all of Jefferson Parish, with the exception of Grand Isle.
The Recreation Millage Renewal, also up for vote, could renew up to 10 mills and is essential for nearly 93 percent of JPRD’s operating budget. This equates to $35 million per year funding local recreational amenities. This includes parks, community centers, playgrounds, and a broad spectrum of activities ranging from athletic programs to camps and senior programs. Without this renewal, the parish could see park closures and the cessation of these vital community services.
Lastly, the Library Millage Renewal, potentially renewing up to 6.5 mills, supports the public libraries across Jefferson Parish by providing $29 million annually, which represents 95 percent of the library system’s operating budget. These funds are earmarked for essentials such as a new Avondale library and a branch near south Kenner. Apart from capital projects, the renewal helps sustain innovative features like the Library of Things and Experience Passes, which stand to face severe cutbacks without successful renewal.
All residents who are interested in the future of their parish's infrastructure, recreational facilities, and libraries are encouraged to attend the information sessions or watch them online. Understanding these issues is vital for making an informed decision come election day.
