Johnson City residents have the opportunity to enhance their community’s greenery by taking part in the upcoming tree giveaway. The Arbor Day event, scheduled for Saturday, April 5, will take place at Metro-Kiwanis Park, located at 817 Guaranda Drive, starting at 9 a.m. until the trees are gone. It's a chance to get your hands on one of the approximately 3,000 tree seedlings that will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Featured varieties include the likes of Redbud, White Dogwood, and Red Maple, with a limit to the number of seedlings each person can claim. This detail comes courtesy of an announcement on the city’s website.
Since 2010, the annual tradition of tree giveaways has helped distribute 39,450 trees to public hands, representing the city's dedication to expanding its urban forest. According to the same city's announcement, Johnson City's Arbor Day efforts have secured it the title Tree City USA for 25 years running from the National Arbor Day Foundation. This designation is no small feat, given that it requires an actual Arbor Day observance, a tree care ordinance, a tree board or dedicated department, and sufficient budgeting for tree maintenance and planting.
"Achieving 25 years as a Tree City signifies Johnson City’s long-term commitment to urban forestry and the benefits that trees bring to our community," City Forester Patrick Walding told Johnson City's news outlet. These words reflect the pride and ongoing dedication the city holds towards enhancing its natural landscape and fostering a sustainable environment.
