A 32-year-old man from Kalamazoo was the victim of a severe hatchet attack at the Holiday Motel in Portage, sustaining serious injuries that led to his hospitalization. As reported by MLive, the incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. last night when Portage police responded to a distress call from the motel at 5540 S. Westnedge Ave., near I-94.
The attack, which took place inside a motel room, plunged the victim into a fight for his life with "severe laceration type injuries," according to WZZM13. Police found the injured man at the motel, and he was promptly transported by ambulance to Bronson Methodist Hospital, where he remains in serious condition.
Following the bloody altercation, a person of interest was apprehended by the police approximately two hours later at a local business on charges unrelated to the hatchet attack - a detail mentioned by WOODTV. This suspect had been near the crime scene when taken into custody.
The Portage Department of Public Safety has not released additional information regarding the circumstances leading up to the assault or any potential motive.
