The City of Kenner has embraced a brighter future for its youth with the aid of Musco Lighting and the National Recreation and Park Association, securing a grant that promises to expand and enhance access to youth sports in the area. This move represents a proactive approach to overcoming barriers to sports participation, especially for those in underserved communities, as well as for individuals with disabilities, according to the City of Kenner.
As detailed in a press release from the City of Kenner, the Kenner Recreation Department is receiving $20,000, a sum that will be channeled towards the adoption of NRPA's Youth Sports Framework, this initiative is poised to foster a positive sports culture and make the joy and benefits of sports more accessible, through which youth participants can reap long-term developmental advantages. The framework lays out strategies to achieve these goals and focuses on building a supportive sports culture for the youth.
At the heart of this endeavor, Kenner is converting its community skate park into a more inclusive domain, one that encourages physical activity for all. The park is set to undergo a transformation that introduces adaptive features, welcoming individuals of varying physical capabilities. To drive this inclusivity, the City of Kenner is establishing an Adaptive Sports Coalition and is collaborating with local paralyzed veterans who will serve as mentors to park users, reinforcing the city's resolve in nurturing health, accessibility, and community interaction.
Mayor Michael Glaser emphasized Kenner's commitment to creating inclusive spaces for all residents to be active and connected. The project aims to revitalize the Recreation Department and promote community wellness. Musco Lighting is contributing $100,000 worth of lighting for the skate park, allowing it to stay open later and be safely enjoyed by people with day-time commitments, while also enhancing the community's sense of security, as per the City of Kenner.
