In a move toward fostering a culture of responsible firearm handling and safety, the Kirkland Police Department has announced they will be hosting a free Gun Safety Class for local residents. The class aims to equip both gun owners and non-owners with best practices in gun safety and will cover topics such as safe firearm handling, secure storage, and accident prevention.
The educational event is set for the evening of April 1, from 5 to 7 p.m., taking place at the Kirkland Justice Center's Totem Lake Room. In a statement released by the City of Kirkland's official website, Councilmember Jon Pascal emphasized that "Everyone benefits from a stronger understanding of gun safety, whether or not they own a gun." Space for the class is limited, with only 20 spots available to individuals 21 and over, and attendees can secure their place through Eventbrite registration.
Those planning to attend are advised by the Kirkland Police Department to leave personal firearms at home. Instead, the class will use inert training aids to provide hands-on instruction in a controlled and safe environment. The attendees will also receive a complimentary small gun safe, supporting the practice of secure firearm storage at home.
The initiative is underpinned by Police Prop 1, a measure approved by voters in 2018, which is dedicated to public safety and community education. For those interested in learning more about the proposition and the broader mission of the Kirkland Police Department, which includes commitments to honor, integrity, and courage, the city's website provides additional resources and contact information.
