Kirsten Bridegan, the widow of Jared Bridegan who was tragically gunned down in a murder-for-hire plot in Jacksonville Beach in 2022, has been honored with the 'Back the Blue Award' from Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier. Presenting the award at the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office, Uthmeier acknowledged the positive impact of the Bexley Box initiative started by Bridegan in remembrance of her husband and in honor of their daughter, Bexley. According to First Coast News, these boxes are filled with comfort items designed to help children cope with traumatic situations they might encounter at crime scenes or in police departments.
The effort by Bridegan through the Bridegan Foundation has seen widespread support, with dozens of Bexley Boxes being delivered to law enforcement agencies across several states. The kit, which includes toys, diapers, formula, and snacks, was born out of the desire to provide solace to children like her daughter, who spent hours at the Jacksonville Beach Police Department following her father's death. As reported by News4Jax, Uthmeier's Back the Blue campaign seeks to recognize those who are making extraordinary efforts to foster positive relationships between law enforcement and community members.
In an emotional address, Bridegan viewed the award not as a personal accolade but as "a testament to every single person who has helped us on this journey," she told First Coast News. Her comments reflect a commitment to continue spreading the comforts offered by the Bexley Boxes, as she finds the feedback from law enforcement on their effectiveness profoundly motivating.
Following the recognition, Attorney General Uthmeier expressed his commitment to ensuring that a Bexley Box reaches every law enforcement office in Florida by the end of 2025, according to a report from First Coast News. This initiative already boasts a presence in 17 states, with 66 boxes in various agencies. Meanwhile, the legal process for the two individuals charged in Jared's murder progresses, with Shanna Gardner and Mario Fernandez anticipated to be back in Duval County court, as noted by Jacksonville.com.
