Lake County is making moves to manage harmful leftovers responsibly. According to an announcement from the Lake County Solid Waste District, locals will be able to unload their hazardous waste materials safely at special collection events. The first opportunity is set for May 31, with the following event on September 20 at the Lake County Fairgrounds from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
Residents will be able to drive up and have their materials unloaded for them by the collection team situated at the Mentor Avenue location. At the designated drop-off point, accepted items include household and automotive cleaners, various chemicals, some types of paints, and other potentially risky supplies. This effort is dedicated to preserving the well-being of Lake County's ecosystem and its inhabitants.
However, not everything toxic can be dropped off, items like latex paint, which you can dry and dispose of with regular trash, are on the no-fly list. Ammunition, medical waste, prescription medicines, and smoke alarms are prohibited, as stated in the City of Mentor’s official announcement. The complete list of what’s accepted and what’s not can be found on the Lake County Utilities Solid Waste Division web page or by calling their office.
For those with questions or in need of additional information, the Solid Waste Division has made itself available to field queries. The efforts of the collections team attempt to remind us that living responsibly doesn't stop at throwing something into a trash can, it requires a considered approach to disposing of the chemical concoctions we rely on in daily life.
