Authorities from the Los Angeles Police Department are actively seeking public assistance to crack a hit-and-run case that has left a pedestrian in a dire state. This unfortunate incident occurred on the evening of March 1, when a four-door gray sedan, potentially a Toyota Camry, according to police, collided with a pedestrian at the intersection of Western Avenue and 1st Street in Koreatown. Per reports by NBC Los Angeles, the pedestrian was crossing within a marked crosswalk when the vehicle, which had a green light, struck and left them critically injured.
The driver is said to have failed to stop and provide necessary aid, continuing southbound on Western Avenue past Weymouth Avenue. In the wake of the incident, the victim, a resident of San Pedro, was transported to the hospital and remains in critical condition. The LAPD emphasizes the legal and moral obligations for drivers to stop, render aid, and identify themselves when involved in a collision.
To assist in the capture and prosecution of the responsible party, the LAPD is offering a handsome reward. Drawing from the City Council’s 2015 amendment to the Los Angeles Administrative Code, the Hit-and-Run Reward Program Trust Fund may reward up to $25,000 for information that leads to an arrest, conviction, or a civil compromise in this hit-and-run case.
Pedestrians and motorists alike are being reminded by law enforcement to stay vigilant and adhere to road safety measures, such as obeying traffic signals and utilizing designated crosswalks. "Drivers are reminded that if they become involved in a collision, they should pull over and stop as soon as it is safe to do so, notify emergency services, and remain at the scene to identify themselves," states the LAPD online newsroom.
Anyone who might hold valuable information concerning this collision, they are urged to reach out to Officer Hurd of the LAPD's South Traffic Division at (213) 321-9681. After hours or during weekends, calls should be directed to 1-877-LAPD-24-7 (877-527-3247). Anonymous tips can be submitted to the L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS (800-222-8477) or through their website, and there's also the "P3 Tips" mobile application for discreet reporting.
