Los Angeles residents witnessed a standoff Wednesday night when a man with a rifle, pointing it at passersby, triggered an LAPD response, ultimately leading to gunfire and a SWAT team's intervention. KTLA reports that the incident began around 8:45 p.m. in the Vermont-Slauson neighborhood on the 6400 block of Figueroa Street.
The situation escalated when the man, who had not been identified, refused LAPD's commands to exit his second-floor apartment and proceeded to barricade himself inside. In their effort to manage the crisis, a SWAT team arrived at the scene, and a robotic dog was even deployed, LAPD confirmed on their PIO X account.
At around 8:45 pm 77th Division officers responded to a radio call of a man with a rifle pointing a firearm at passerby’s in the 6400 block of Figueroa Street. The suspect refused to comply with the officers’ commands and became barricaded in the second floor apartment.

Drama unfolded when the suspect was seen with a firearm in a second-story window, and officers were forced to discharge their weapons. "SWAT officers responded and formed a plan to resolve the situation and subsequently requested the suspect to come out of the apartment, at which time the suspect was seen with a firearm in a second-story window, and an Officer Involved Shooting occurred," a spokesperson for the LAPD said. The standoff ended with the suspect struck by the gunfire, then exiting the apartment with his hand wrapped in a towel, suggestively indicating a wound.
After being shot, the suspect was taken into custody and then to a local hospital, where he remains in stable condition, according to CBS News Los Angeles. The surrounding area from Figueroa Street between Gage Avenue and 67th Street was closed for several hours as police conducted their investigation. Officers involved in the incident emerged unscathed, and no additional injuries were reported among community members.
The events indeed raise concerns and questions, which investigators now turn to body-worn camera footage and local surveillance videos to untangle. Authorities have yet to release further details about the suspect's motives or the specifics of the engagement between him and the responding officers.
