A man was wounded early Friday after a shooting on the bike trail behind Sam Lynn Ballpark in Bakersfield, and police still have not identified or arrested a suspect. Officers responding to the scene found a wounded victim who was rushed to a local hospital in stable condition.
Bakersfield police said the shooting was reported around 12:40 a.m. Friday along the river bike trail behind the ballpark, according to KGET 17 News. A bicycle and clothing were seen at the scene, though it remains unclear whether either item belonged to the victim or to the person who opened fire.
As of Friday, authorities had not released a suspect description or announced any arrest in the case, leaving open questions about whether the victim was targeted or caught in an ambush.
A Landmark Backdrop to the Search
The shooting unfolded just behind one of Bakersfield's most recognizable sports landmarks. Sam Lynn Ballpark, built in 1941 on Chester Avenue, serves as the home field for the Bakersfield Train Robbers of the independent Pecos League, according to Wikipedia. The stadium is also known in professional baseball circles for its unusual westward orientation, which has historically forced summer night games to delay first pitch or pause play until the sun sets behind center field.
The bike trail where the shooting occurred is behind the ballpark near the river. The Kern River Parkway Trail is a paved path of about 30 miles along the Kern River that passes Sam Lynn Ballpark. The route passes an oil field, parks, Sam Lynn Ballpark, and California State University Bakersfield.
An encampment sweep has taken place along the river corridor, according to the City of Bakersfield.

Beyond firearm violence, the Kern River Parkway Trail is also central to a separate, longer-running safety conversation in Bakersfield. The trail is a scenic route for cyclists, and the city averaged 72 injury accidents involving bicycles per year over the last ten years, according to Chain Cohn Clark.
No arrests had been announced in the Sam Lynn Ballpark trail shooting as of Friday, and police have not said whether the case is connected to any other recent incident in the city.
