The City of Las Cruces has named industry veteran Richard Hanway as its new Transit Director, bringing nearly three decades of transportation experience to the helm. Hanway, who holds a bachelor's degree in business administration, started his tenure with the city in 2010 as a Bus Operator. His climb through the ranks has been steady, with a promotion to Route Supervisor in 2014 and then to Transit Manager the following year, as per the City of Las Cruces.
During his stint as Transit Manager, Hanway proved pivotal in advancing the city's green initiatives. His efforts were instrumental in securing a substantial grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration. Which enabled the acquisition of five electric buses for the city’s fleet in 2024, and an additional six in 2025. The move marks a significant shift towards sustainable transportation for Las Cruces.
In his new role as Transit Director, Hanway will oversee the ongoing transition to an eco-friendlier fleet and continue to develop the city's transit strategies. His appointment is being celebrated by colleagues and community members alike, who look forward to his impact on the city's transportation landscape. "Please join us in congratulating him on his new role as Transit Director," as obtained by the City of Las Cruces.
Las Cruces residents can expect Hanway to channel his extensive experience into further improvements in the local transit system. The introduction of electric buses under his guidance is just an example of the type of forward-thinking projects expected to come. As the city leans into a more sustainable future, committed authorities like Hanway serve as the driving force behind this critical evolution of public transport, said the city.
