Las Cruces has named a new Fire Chief, a 19-year veteran of their ranks. Michael Daniels, who has been with the Las Cruces Fire Department (LCFD) since 2006, is set to take command on March 24, according to the City of Las Cruces. Daniels fills the shoes left by Jason Smith who retired last January after more than two decades of service.
A series of promotions have marked Daniel's rise through the department, from roles as varied as a Driver/Operator to Battalion Chief, before acquiring the title of Deputy Chief in January 2023. He boasts a resume that includes military service in the U.S. Navy, and if that weren't impressive enough, Daniels also presides over the Southwestern Division of the International Association of Fire Chiefs and contributes to the state's fire protection efforts as one of the Governor's appointees.
City Manager Ikani Taumoepeau highlighted the competitive selection process, which featured both external and internal candidates. As obtained by the City of Las Cruces, Taumoepeau expressed his confidence in Daniels, "It’s a testament to the Las Cruces Fire Department and the City of Las Cruces that we have such well-trained and highly qualified personnel who are capable of stepping in and fulfilling the duties of this vital position."
Educationally, Daniels hasn't been idle either. He earned his bachelor’s degree from New Mexico State University and later an MBA from Western New Mexico University. His academic and professional achievements have been recognized, such as when he was named Firefighter of the Year in 2011 by the Las Cruces Chamber of Commerce and when he earned national accolades for his risk reduction research.
Michael Daniels will officially take reigns of LCFD later this month, ensuring the department remains in capable hands dedicated to service and excellence. The community and the department alike await to see how Daniels applies his depth of experience and knowledge in his new role as Fire Chief.
