Pickleball enthusiasts in Las Cruces will need to adjust their schedules as the East Mesa Public Recreation Center prepares to roll out new shade structures over their courts. Starting March 17, the Las Cruces Parks and Recreation and Public Works departments are slated to begin the installation, which is poised to disrupt play on the famed courts. According to the City of Las Cruces, the much-welcomed project is estimated to take approximately eight weeks to complete.
The endeavor is not expected to be a quick affair, with the works scheduled to intermittently close the courts over the eight weeks. The closures will be structured to gradually affect half of the complex at a time, but players should prepare for the possibility of the entire facility shutting down temporarily to safely move in equipment and materials. The city assures that the ultimate goal is to all but guarantee the comfort and protection of players from the relentless sun that has bedeviled matches in past summer months.
For those who frequent the courts, the temporary closure will be more than a small inconvenience, but the long-term gain of shaded play areas is a likely win. In a move to protect everyone involved, the city emphasizes that the safety of both workers and visitors will remain a top priority throughout the construction period. Users of the facility are implored to adhere to all posted signage and to steer clear of designated work zones and staging areas.
