In a recent update from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Search and Rescue unit, two climbers were rescued from a precarious situation in Ice Box Canyon at Red Rock. The operation, which took place on Thursday, March 27, required SAR personnel to respond to a scenario where the climbers had been reported overdue.
The individuals had ventured into a canyoneering route known as "The Maze," possessing adequate equipment but lacking the preparation necessary to complete the rigorous trek. The LVMPD Search and Rescue, sharing the incident on their social media, indicated that "Two SAR officers were inserted via hoist but due to strong winds were unable to be extracted." Despite the challenging conditions, the rescue team's familiarity with the area proved beneficial.
To overcome the difficulties presented by the strong winds, which impeded the traditional extraction via hoist, the SAR officers carried extra equipment enabling them to guide the climbers out on foot. The route involved several rappels, and according to the lvmpdsar post, "They assisted the subjects out of the canyon after several rappels." Fortunately, the two climbers emerged from the ordeal without any injuries and were safely returned to their vehicles.
Expressing gratitude for the collaborative efforts necessary for the operation's success, the LVMPD Search and Rescue team extended thanks to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), whose assistance was instrumental. The partnership between local law enforcement and federal agencies continues to be a critical component in successful rescue missions across the region.
