The case of missing University of Pittsburgh student Sudiksha Konanki, who vanished while on vacation in the Dominican Republic, has seen new developments after Joshua Riibe, a fellow American tourist and the last person known to have seen Konanki, was seen with investigators on a beach in Punta Cana, as WPXI reported. An NBC News team observed Riibe, accompanied by his father and attorney, gesturing towards the sea — an area that has become a focal point in the search for Konanki, last seen early March 6th after a beach outing with friends.
NBC News reported that Dominican officials seized Riibe's travel documents last Friday. Since then, Riibe has been under constant police escort, a measure confirmed by his attorney's claim that "he is permanently escorted by the police anywhere he goes." Regional Red Cross Director Fernando Placeres has not confirmed if a body has been found, though searches continue. In a brief interaction at the resort, Riibe told NBC News, “I’m just trying to help them out,” citing the inherent dangers of the ocean.
The investigation has taken a more complicated turn, with Dominican authorities examining possible inconsistencies in Riibe's testimonies. According to 6ABC, Riibe recounted to prosecutors an incident where he tried to rescue Konanki from drowning. "I was holding her under my arm and swimming. It was hard. I was a pool lifeguard, not the ocean. Then, when I finally touched the sand, I put her in front of me. Then she got up to go get her stuff since the ocean had moved us," Riibe explained.
Meanwhile, Riibe has been unable to leave the hotel freely due to the seizure of his passport and heightened surveillance, "If he wants to leave the hotel, he cannot do that freely, but with police," his lawyer Beatriz Santana stated, calling the situation illegal as no formal charges have been laid. Despite the ongoing investigation, Riibe's family extended their sympathies to the Konanki family, "We express our deep sorrow and solidarity with the family of Sudiksha Konanski during this painful time. Above all, we wish to contribute to the search efforts and understand the anguish and uncertainty they are going through and we share the hope that Sudiksha will be found as soon as possible," a statement issued by the family said, as cited by 6ABC.
