Long Beach police have successfully apprehended a suspect in the murder of Durell Shell, a 38-year-old man who was fatally shot last month. Homicide detectives pursued the case since the incident occurred on February 18 on the 1400 block of Locust Avenue. According to a news release from the Long Beach Police Department, 28-year-old Edgar Melgar Salazar, a resident of Long Beach, was arrested on Thursday with assistance from the Special Investigations Division and SWAT team. "Through their investigation, Homicide detectives identified the suspect as Edgar Melgar Salazar," said the Long Beach Police Department, as reported by KTLA.
Salazar was booked into Long Beach City Jail on suspicion of murder, and his bail has been set at $3 million. The motive behind the shooting initially appeared to be gang-related, yet detectives have since indicated that they do not believe the victim and suspect were known to one another. Homicide Detective Reyes affirmed, "While the investigation remains ongoing, detectives do not believe the suspect and victim were previously known to one another," as detailed by the Long Beach Police Department. Officers hope to further investigate and definitively determine the circumstances and motive surrounding the fatal event.
