A recent court case in Queens has highlighted the ongoing battle against the opioid crisis, as Dennis Carrol, a Long Island resident, was found guilty of possessing a substantial amount of the deadly drug fentanyl. According to a report by the Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz, the 34-year-old was convicted on multiple counts of controlled substance possession after a four-week trial culminating in a day-and-a-half of jury deliberation, as per the Queens District Attorney's Office.
On November 28, 2022, Carrol was stopped by DEA agents while driving in Hollis, where the seizure of two kilograms of fentanyl, worth an estimated $80,000, took place, this specific drug is known for its extreme potency and lethality, a mere 2 milligrams can prove fatal, placing thousands at risk if distributed. “Fentanyl is an extraordinarily dangerous drug that has taken the lives of thousands of New Yorkers. This defendant trafficked 2 kilograms of this deadly poison into Queens, and thanks to an extraordinary partnership between my office and the Drug Enforcement Administration we were able to seize these drugs before anyone else was harmed. We will continue our relentless efforts to target those who transport and sell deadly narcotics in our neighborhoods,” Katz stated, as noted by the Queens District Attorney's Office.
Justice Leigh Cheng of the Supreme Court scheduled Carrol's sentencing for April 16, where he confronts up to 30 years in prison for his actions. The collaborative investigation by the District Attorney's Major Narcotics Unit and the DEA's New York Division was pivotal to the case, leading to Carrol's arrest as part of their wider effort to combat narcotics trafficking in the region. Assistant District Attorney Kieran Linehan led the prosecution, with supervision by several senior figures within the District Attorney's Major Economic Crimes Bureau.
