In a significant clampdown on the opioid crisis that hits close to home, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office has charged three individuals, including a pair of siblings, with serious felonies related to a substantial haul of fentanyl. As reported on March 11th by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, over 50 pounds of the drug, enough to end half a million lives, were seized.

Fentanyl has been declared the leading cause of accidental overdose deaths in Los Angeles County, as stated by District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman. Capturing a larger quantity than last year's seizure at the U.S.-Canadian border, Hochman expressed a resolute stance to "end this tragedy," according to the district attorney’s official announcement. The Major Narcotics Division is leading the prosecution, with Head Deputy District Attorney Juan Mejia and Deputy District Attorney Mark Inaba receiving specific commendation for their roles.

The California Department of Justice's Fentanyl Enforcement Program alongside the Downey Police Department played a key role in unraveling this drug operation, as per the District Attorney's announcement. California's Attorney General Rob Bonta hailed the multi-agency collaboration as a testament to the state's commitment to "protecting California families from the dangers of fentanyl," with expectations that these efforts could save untold lives.

Not immune to the devastation that fentanyl inflicts upon family foundations, Downey Police Chief Scott Loughner iterated the deadly drug's impact across California and the nation. Every operation that removes such dangers from the streets fortresses the community against further loss. He and his department stood in diligence with state and county partners, as described in the DA's statement.

The accused individuals, Priscilla Gomez, Carlos Manuel Mariscal, and Gustavo Omar Gomez, face heavy prison sentences if convicted on all charges. Priscilla Gomez, specifically being held in federal custody on additional counts of possession and transportation, along with Mariscal and Gustavo Gomez, are awaiting preliminary hearings with considerable bails recommended. The seized drugs' street value is estimated between $453,000 to $1.36 million, with substances found in a vehicle and a Downey residence on January 22.
