In a harrowing incident just north of Calpine, a man and his dog were rescued after being trapped for nearly a day in their vehicle, which had veered off Highway 89 and crashed down a hillside. The Sierra County Sheriff's Office reported to KCRA that the vehicle was found 30 feet off the highway when a passerby called it in at approximately 10 a.m. Wednesday. The 36-year-old driver reportedly said he "wasn't paying attention" and subsequently left the road.
It was a sizable effort by emergency crews to safely extricate the driver from the wrecked vehicle, an endeavor which took nearly an hour to perform carefully. According to details shared with CBS News Sacramento, the man had originally crashed on Tuesday afternoon and spent the entire night with his dog in the crashed truck. Images of the scene depicted the truck having collided with trees before coming to rest on its side.
The California Highway Patrol mentioned to CBS News Sacramento that, following the crash, the man was transported to an area hospital with moderate injuries. His dog, fortunately, appeared to be unharmed after the incident and has since been placed in the care of a friend of the driver. This close call serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of inattention on the road, especially in areas where help may not be immediately at hand.
