Maui Police Chief John Pelletier has been named in a civil lawsuit alongside Sean "Diddy" Combs, implicating them in alleged crimes including racketeering and sex trafficking. Pelletier is accused of having served as security and facilitator for Combs and impersonating a law enforcement officer from different jurisdictions. According to Hawaii News Now, Pelletier allegedly posed as a Contra Costa, Calif. sheriff deputy to discourage an alleged rape victim from pursuing charges and later kidnapped and restrained plaintiffs at gunpoint in his home.

The Maui Police Department, through spokesperson Alana Pico, has denied the chief's connections to the individuals named in the suit, asserting that the evidence will show the claims to be false. On the other hand, Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen has recommended that Pelletier be placed on administrative leave during the investigation. In a letter addressed to the Maui Police Commission, Mayor Bissen stated that this measure is not an admission of guilt, but rather a way to uphold the integrity of the office in light of serious allegations, "Given the gravity of the allegations, I recommend that the Maui Police Commission place Chief Pelletier on administrative leave pending further investigation," Mayor Bissen articulated, as per report by KHON2.

In response to the accusations, the police chief and Maui Police Department have highlighted Pelletier's previous commendation by the Rape Crisis Center in 2018, which recognized his efforts toward sexual assault prevention as a captain in the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. Pelletier's award for his role in the Stay S.A.F.E. program was cited to dispute the credibility of the allegations against him. Alana Pico conveyed a strong rebuttal, "These baseless allegations not only harm Chief Pelletier but also show a lack of respect for victims of abuse, whose voices deserve to be heard and supported with compassion and integrity," as mentioned in a statement obtained by Hawaii News Now.

Meanwhile, other high-profile figures, such as NFL player Odell Beckham Jr. and comedian Druski, were also implicated in the suit for alleged rape, though both have publicly denied the allegations. Beckham Jr. expressed his disbelief via social media, and Druski called the allegation a "fabricated lie." Legal analyst Doug Chin weighed in, noting that naming high-profile individuals in lawsuits is not uncommon because it can potentially lead to financial settlements. "It's very easy to be targeted, because that potentially opens up the finances and the wallet," Chin commented to KHON2.

The Maui Police Commission, in light of the contentious lawsuit and Mayor Bissen's recommendation, will need to decide on the course of action for Pelletier. The date of the next meeting to address these developments has not been announced. The separate criminal case against Combs continues to unfold, with the entertainer in custody awaiting trial.
