As Mecklenburg County grapples with the issue of gun violence, local artists are stepping in to offer a unique brand of advocacy through art. In a partnership between the County and the Arts and Science Council, five local artists have been commissioned to produce works that aim to prevent gun violence, according to a news release on the Mecklenburg County website. Deputy County Manager Leslie Johnson highlighted the emotional impact of the artwork, saying, "Gun violence impacts all of us and we all feel the collective loss," further emphasizing the responsibility shared by the community in mitigating this violence.

The artwork will debut at the Peace-Builders Youth Summit on Saturday, March 29 from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the West Charlotte Recreation Center, as Mecklenburg County reported. Dr. Kimberly Scott, Mecklenburg County assistant Health director, expressed the County's dedication to confronting violence, particularly gun violence, and the summit is a platform for teens to become involved in the conversation and the quest for solutions, the theme being 'Violence Free, Begins With Me.'

The artwork, once revealed, won't be confined to the summit alone, but will be stationed across five Park and Recreation locations in Mecklenburg County to continually promote gun violence prevention narratives. The display venues and their corresponding artwork titles are as listed by Mecklenburg County: Arbor Glen Recreation Center will showcase "Inherent Dignity," West Charlotte Recreation Center presents "Am I Next?", Sugaw Creek Recreation Center hosts "Growth Not Guns," Bette Rae Thomas Recreation Center has "Seeding Hope," and "Out of the Streets, Into the Fields" will be viewed at Revolution Sports Academy and Park.

The integration of art into this critical issue reflects a strategic move to engage the community through visual stories, hoping to incite a change, this measure comes as an innovative response to an escalating concern that seeks to harness the collective energies of young minds and the broader public.
