In recognition of the irreplaceable role social workers play in Mecklenburg County, March has been officially designated as Social Work Month. The county's social workers, who are vital in offering a plethora of services across departments, are being celebrated for their unwavering commitment to the well-being of the community's individuals and families.
Per the Mecklenburg County's recent proclamation, the theme for this year's Social Work Month is "Social Work: Compassion + Action." Despite bearing the heavy responsibility of various roles, from safeguarding children to supporting the elderly and aiding victims of domestic violence, they carry out their duties, sometimes underappreciated in the societal fabric.
The breadth of their work spans far and wide. Social workers tirelessly work to place children in nurturing adoptive or foster homes, ensuring they are aligned with the nutritious food on the table in homes struggling with food insecurity, and providing financial support to those with limited income. They are the backbone supporting adults who need care, transportation, or medical assistance and also play a crucial role in helping the homeless secure permanent housing.
"Social work is not just a profession—it’s a calling," Kimberly Henderson, director of Mecklenburg County’s Child, Family, and Adult Services, told Mecklenburg County News. She emphasized the social workers' dedication by adding, "Each day, our social workers take on some of the hardest work in public service. It takes dedication, resilience and an unshakable commitment to serving others. These professionals show up every day, ready to make a difference in the lives of those who need them the most."
Their essential services are acknowledged not just by proclamation, but in the daily relief and support felt by countless residents who benefit from their compassionate action throughout Mecklenburg County each day.
