Time is running out for Mecklenburg County residents who are in need of help with their energy bills. The county's Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) is available for applications until March 31, providing a one-time payment to assist with heating costs. To obtain this aid, residents don't necessarily need to be behind on their energy bills, a notable aspect of the program aiming to prevent individuals from having to make the harsh choice between warmth and other basic necessities.

An eligibility for the program includes at least one U.S. citizen or legal resident in the household, being responsible for heating costs, and having an income that is at or below 150% of the Federal Poverty Limit for those 60 years and older, or 130% for those under 60. As reported by MeckNC, households must provide several documents when applying, including identification, a utility bill, Social Security number, and proof of income.

Residents can apply for LIEAP through several avenues, such as the North Carolina ePASS online service, or by mailing, emailing, or in person at designated county centers. To complete an application over the phone, individuals can call 704-336-3000. If the application is successful, the one-time payment will be sent directly to the utility company, and it may take up to six weeks for the payment to be processed.

Since the opportunity to apply opened on December 1, 2024, more than 5,000 applicants have been approved, reflecting the community's need for such support. "Access to affordable heating is essential for the well-being of individuals and families, especially during the winter months," Devon Kilpatrick, energy program manager, told MeckNC. "This program provides critical financial support to help households manage heating costs and maintain a safe and comfortable home environment." The aid amounts to $300, $400, or $500, depending on the primary heating source in the home.
