Memphis has a new basketball star in PJ Haggerty, who was named to the Second Team All-American by the Associated Press. Haggerty becomes the first University of Memphis player to earn this honor since Chris Douglas-Roberts in 2008, as reported by Action News 5. This season, Haggerty averaged 21.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game.
Haggerty played a key role in the Tigers' success, scoring over 20 points in 23 games. His performance helped lead the team to their best regular-season record since 2012-13 and a conference tournament win. According to Local Memphis, he is the only player in the country averaging at least 21.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 1.5 steals per game.
In addition to his scoring ability, Haggerty is also a leader at the free-throw line, topping the nation with 221 made free throws and 270 attempts. This highlights his skill in drawing fouls and capitalizing on those opportunities. As noted by Audacy, his all-around game places him in a rare group, reminiscent of Ja Morant's impressive 2018-19 season.
The Tigers, seeded No. 5, will face No. 12 seed Colorado State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Seattle. With his recent accolades and strong performances, Haggerty is poised to play a crucial role in his team's tournament run.
