Over the weekend, Memphis Connect held its annual All-Star Game, chalking up yet another successful year of engaging local youth with sports, and fostering community ties. Last Saturday, the event drew in a crowd of 300 kids, ranging from bright-eyed four-year-olds to teenagers on the cusp of adulthood, all with a shared goal: to play basketball and to celebrate their academic achievements.
According to a post from the Memphis Police Department's Facebook page, Officer Justin Crutcher, who is not only seasoned law enforcement but also the current President of Memphis Connect, was at the helm of the event and his involvement is a symbol of the close-knit ties between the organization and local authorities, showcasing a collaborative effort to steer young people towards constructive activities and away from the all-too-common traps of urban streets.
A strong presence of civic leadership was palpable with the likes of Mayor Paul Young, and police department notables Deputy Chief Kirkdoffer, and Major Gray, marking their territory not through enforcing the law this time but through the more amiable act of handing out medals to the budding athletes. The ripple effect of such an event couldn't be clearer – "Together, we're building a stronger, safer Memphis—protecting what matters," proclaimed the MPD on social media.
