A Memphis family and community grapple with the aftermath of a shooting that left a 2-year-old injured by debris and a woman shot. On Saturday, Memphis Police Department (MPD) officers arrived at the Condominiums at Brentwood to discover the violent family encounter, where 24-year-old Jamison Cameron is accused of opening fire on his sister and younger relatives, as detailed by reports from Action News 5.
Initially, it was reported that the toddler was shot in the face, but further clarification from city officials on Monday revealed that the child's injuries were due to debris. The woman wounded, identified as Cameron's sister, was walking into the home with the toddler and two other children when the incident occurred. Notwithstanding, a 5-month-old and a 14-year-old were also present in the house during the shooting, according to information obtained by Local Memphis in Article 2.
Cameron faces serious charges including five counts of attempted second-degree murder and employing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony. Despite the severity of the situation, police still do not know why Cameron shot at the victims. "The victims do not know why Cameron shot at them," the Memphis Police Department stated. Currently, he's being held at 201 Poplar with a bond of $750,000 and an expected court appearance on Monday, as reported by Action News 5.
The shooting has ignited a response from community members concerned about gun violence in Memphis. "I think that the gun violence has to stop," local resident Lashanta Rudd told FOX13 Memphis. She also emphasized the role local communities play in spearheading change, "We got to make the change because we live here in Orange Mound," said Rudd.
