The interactive art collective known as Meow Wolf, which began its journey in Santa Fe, is expanding its unique brand of exhibits to New York City. Gothamist reports that the exhibit will occupy a multi-floor, around 75,000-square-foot space at Pier 17 in South Street Seaport, marking the company's seventh permanent location.
Meow Wolf is no stranger to ambitious projects, having already established popular art spaces in cities such as Las Vegas, Denver, and Texas, with Los Angeles set to follow next year. "This is going to be the most ambitiously creative Meow Wolf we’ve ever done," Meow Wolf’s NYC-based CEO, Jose Tolosa, told Gothamist in a recent interview. Despite the excitement, an opening date has not been firmly set, though Tolosa estimates it will be around 2028, taking approximately three years to actualize their vision.
Time Out New York describes the forthcoming exhibit as a "maximalist mix of art, storytelling and interactivity," emphasizing that Meow Wolf's experiences do not fit conventional categories. “They are interactive universes filled with layers of narrative, where every visitor becomes part of the story. Meow Wolf New York will push these boundaries even further, connecting to Meow Wolf’s larger cosmic universe while crafting something distinctly New York,” the press release obtained by Time Out New York explains.
The founders of Meow Wolf are optimistic about the exhibition's potential to blend with the city's diverse culture. "Meow Wolf New York will be a love letter to the stories, people and artistic spirit that make the city an unmatched cultural powerhouse," the creators conveyed in a press release. Adding to this sentiment, Vince Kadlubek, Meow Wolf founder and chief vision officer, told Time Out New York that "New York has always been a city that thrives on reinvention, making it the perfect place for Meow Wolf’s next evolution."
While many are eagerly anticipating the eventual reveal of the exhibit's theme and the bar and restaurant that will accompany the space, details remain under wraps. Nevertheless, enthusiasts following the development closely are encouraged to sign up for updates on the exhibit's website and follow its official Instagram account, as per Time Out New York's suggestion. The projected opening window lies somewhere between late 2027 and early 2028.
