The Mesa City Council has made its decision, and Scott Butler is stepping up as the new City Manager. His track record with Mesa spans over two decades, and his promotion from Assistant City Manager to the top job was met with unanimous approval from the council members. Scheduled to take the helm on June 1, 2025, Butler will be filling the shoes of Christopher J. Brady, who's set to retire after nearly 20 years of service.
During his Mesa tenure, Butler has juggled several roles, climbing the ladder from Deputy City Manager to Director of Government Relations and then Assistant City Manager since July 2022. Mesa Now reports that the Mayor of Mesa, Mark Freeman, expressed the Council's complete confidence in his ability to lead our organization. Freeman highlighted Butler's deep community understanding as a pivotal asset, stating that they are fortunate to have someone of Scott Butler's caliber ready to tackle this critical role.
In a statement of grace and optimism, Butler sees Mesa on the brink of an incredible future. "Mesa is positioned for an incredible future. I'm honored to have been selected to help guide our city through its next chapter," Butler told Mesa Now. His vision includes a blend of fiscal discipline and strategic innovation, intending to enhance service delivery while fostering the city's economic growth.
Noteworthy in Butler's portfolio are significant achievements such as ensuring the presence of the Chicago Cubs in Mesa and securing federal support for the Mesa Gateway Airport air traffic control tower. In light of the outgoing City Manager's praise, Brady noted Butler's dual expertise in managing daily city operations and steering long-term strategy. "He understands Mesa's operations from the ground up and has earned the trust of staff and community stakeholders," Brady remarked in Mesa Now.
Looking ahead, Butler's agenda is charged with maintaining Mesa's fiscal health, streamlining development processes, and bolstering public safety.
