Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, along with a 22-state coalition, secured a preliminary injunction against a Trump administration policy that sought to freeze federal funds. The U.S. District Court for the District of Rhode Island, led by Judge John J. McConnell, issued the injunction, temporarily blocking the policy's implementation, according to the Department of Attorney General.
Dana Nessel announced a legal victory against a policy from a January 27 Office of Management and Budget memorandum that restricted funding for state programs. She stated, "I am grateful that my colleagues and I were able to secure this victory to preserve essential programs for Michiganders while stopping President Trump's illegal attempt to strip funding for vital government services." The Court ruled that the policy unlawfully bypassed congressional authority and required the administration to submit compliance evidence by March 14 regarding Federal Emergency Management Agency funds, as reported by the Department of Attorney General.
The contested policy disrupted federally-funded state services nationwide. In response, Attorney General Nessel and a multistate coalition filed a lawsuit on January 28, securing a temporary restraining order three days later and later obtaining an injunction. Last Friday, they filed a second enforcement motion over withheld Federal Emergency Management Agency funds. Attorneys general from multiple states, including Arizona and Wisconsin, are working to protect federal resources critical to state programs, as stated by the Department of Attorney General.
