It's not every day that a local hero gets the recognition they deserve, especially when illness forces them to miss the big celebration. But for Corporal Robert Newberry of the Midlothian Police Department in Texas, his department made sure his accolades did not go unnoticed, despite some setbacks. In a social media post, the Midlothian Police Department shared how Newberry was honored with the 2024 Supervisor of the Year award, an announcement that was initially made at last month's Department Banquet, which Newberry missed due to illness.
Corporal Newberry stood out for "his dedication to service and demonstrated leadership," according to the department's Facebook page. His role is critical not just in times of crisis but, also in fostering preventive measures within the community. As the full-time Crisis Intervention Officer, Newberry is at the forefront of guiding community members to resources that can aid in maintaining their mental health. His reactive capabilities are equally commendable especially when responding to instances where individuals with mental health crises or cognitive impairments require immediate help.
Leadership within the police force extends beyond intervention. Corporal Newberry embodies this as he frequently steps in as watch commander on Patrol when needed. His commitment has extended to assisting with training within the department. His peers and supervisors value his readiness to go above and beyond the call of duty, evident in the recognition he has received.
