The Minnesota State Patrol is actively seeking new troopers and offering a unique opportunity for individuals from various backgrounds to join their ranks through the Law Enforcement Training Opportunity (LETO) program. The LETO initiative is not confined to those holding criminal justice degrees— it's an inclusive pipeline designed to allow people with a two- or four-year degree in any discipline to transition into law enforcement, as reported by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety's news post.

According to a recent story shared by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, the LETO program has witnessed compelling transformations, including that of Trooper Wade Chit, who transitioned from the life of a refugee to becoming a state patrol officer. The program aims to attract a diverse pool of candidates, from stay-at-home parents to individuals seeking to exchange a stationary office environment for a role that promises a more thrilling and rewarding day-to-day experience. State Patrol Col. Christina Bogojevic noted that LETO applicants “come from all walks of life” and are united by a “common goal — helping others through public service and making our roadways safer.”

One such LETO graduate, Trooper Vince Wren, traded the path of law academia for the adrenaline of the highway patrol. Wren, whose mother served as a police officer, views his new career as a continuation of his family's public service legacy. He found the state patrol's LETO program to offer a more dynamic work environment, with the added advantage of having his education funded. “Whether it be a traffic stop or a crash, there’s just so much gratitude and appreciation for us being there and helping people through really tough situations,” Wren told Minnesota Department of Public Safety's news post.

Interested applicants for the LETO program can pull in 80 percent of a trooper's starting salary during their first 22 weeks of training, which is currently $79,469 through June 17, 2025. Post-training, recruits will receive full base pay. Following the initial application, hopefuls are to undergo a series of evaluations, including a physical exam, an oral interview, and a background check. Following acceptance, the trainees will embark on their journey at the State Patrol Academy in the upcoming year alongside traditional trainees. More information and application details are available on the Minnesota State Patrol website.
