North Carolina has been facing a rash of brush fires fueled by high winds, low humidity, and dry conditions. Yesterday, with wind gusts up to 20 mph and temperatures surging to the mid-70s, fires swept through different parts of the state, including a significant incident in Durham. According to a WRAL report, Durham firefighters combated the flames stemming from an exploded transformer on Erwin Road. Durham resident Bea Miller described the ordeal as "scary to see the flames continue up the hill."
Duke Energy confirmed that the incident led to a lengthy power outage affecting almost 300 customers. As emergency crews toiled to contain the situation, another fire that originated from a tree hitting powerlines prompted the closure of a section of Erwin Road. Firefighters acted swiftly in extinguishing the fire and subsequently clearing the debris to reopen the thoroughfare. Information from CBS17 indicated that authorities advised citizens to stay clear of the affected areas earlier on Saturday.
Brush fires did not just afflict Durham; they dotted the landscapes of the Sandhills as well. One particularly fast-moving fire in a southeast Raleigh neighborhood burned through backyards along a row of townhouses, according to a statement obtained by ABC11. Additionally, in a saddening turn of events, a fire in Coats resulted in a fatality, though details remain scant. Fire experts reminded the public of the importance of preventive measures, such as proper disposal of cigarette butts and exercising caution around potential sources of ignition.
