March is Nevada Moves Month – a chance to swap four wheels for two or even none at all. This annual event encourages kids across the state, from Clark to Washoe, to walk or bike to school, promoting safety and the benefits of staying active. Whether it’s a school event like a bike-a-thon or a walk around the neighborhood, officials want everyone to get involved.

Beyond the health-halo glow of a daily bike ride or walk, Nevada Moves is driving home lessons in pedestrian and bike safety. Over 6,600 students have already traded bus seats for bike saddles in recent years, participating in school-sponsored events, and this March, more are expected to join the ranks. Mathew Morris, NDOT's Active Transportation Manager, drilled into the benefits when he said, "Walking and bicycling to school helps reduce the number of vehicle trips near schools; this increases safety, reduces congestion, improves air quality, and encourages healthy habits from a young age." These habits are movers and shakers in the fight against obesity-related diseases, as per the Nevada Department of Transportation.

Pedestrians and cyclists, wear bright clothes, put away your phone, wear a helmet, and stay alert. Always cross at designated spots and check for cars before crossing. Drivers, stay focused and keep your hands off your phone. For more details, you can reach NDOT’s Safe Routes to School Coordinator, Chantelle Ewing, at (775) 888-3065 or [email protected].
