As the City of New Orleans grapples with the hefty task of mending its battered roads, residents can look forward to a thorough breakdown of the city’s plan to utilize nearly $2 billion for unfinished street repairs, which will top the agenda at the City Council Budget Committee meeting tomorrow. According to the New Orleans City Council's own announcement, members of the public are invited to attend the session scheduled for 1 p.m. at Council Chambers, located at 1300 Perdido Street.
On the docket is a discussion on how CDM Smith, in conjunction with City Administration, plans to prioritize and address the remaining projects through the Joint Infrastructure Recovery Request (JIRR) program. The committee has requested specifics on how these projects are selected and which might be deferred. Additionally, they seek insight into coordination with the Sewerage and Water Board's SSERP drainage projects to prevent duplicate work.
In an effort to provide transparency and address the frustrations of motorists and pedestrians, details such as the methodology behind project selection, a list and map of projects set for completion with remaining FEMA funds, including timelines, status, and scope, will be shared. The committee aims to ensure that all details surrounding these efforts are clear. Moreover, information on projects that were not funded and the additional financial requirements for their completion will also be covered.
Looking ahead, the committee will hear from the Administration about a proposed bond proposition, including details on projects and estimated costs. This bond sale could help fund critical infrastructure improvements, aiming for safer, smoother roads while requiring careful management of public funds.
