The New Orleans Police Department has released its latest batch of crime stats, offering a snapshot of criminal activity in the city from March 9 to March 15, as reported by NOPD News. Figures show noteworthy arrests and trends in gun arrests and seizures that suggest an evolving landscape of law enforcement in New Orleans.
Ambushed by his own success, Mackenzie Fair was rebooked on a count of second-degree murder while already locked up on unrelated charges. NOPD's arrest of Dominic Sartin for a fatality following a hit-and-run and the Baton Rouge Police's apprehension of Broderick Butler alongside NOPD underscore a week marked by significant law enforcement actions. Butler's arrest, in particular, involved charges framed by illegal possession of a stolen firearm and attempted second-degree murder.
The NOPD's preliminary report indicates a significant decrease in the number of gun-related arrests so far in 2025 compared to the previous year. A 56-percent drop is noted, with 76 arrests for illegal possession of a firearm this year juxtaposed against 173 during the same period in 2024.
Conversely, in their struggle against firearms proliferation, NOPD has amassed a collection of 341 firearms seized in criminal investigations this year, a figure which falls short of the 615 firearms seized last year during the same timeframe. This marks a 44-percent decrease, suggesting perhaps a complex set of circumstances underpinning the flow and control of guns in New Orleans.
