The city of Phoenix has opened a new shelter aimed at providing crucial support for individuals experiencing homelessness. Located near 67th Avenue and Van Buren Street, the Phoenix Navigation Center offers 280 beds and is poised to deliver not just immediate assistance but a pathway towards self-sufficiency.

Phoenix Councilman Carlos Galindo-Elvira, who has been involved in the project, stressed the importance of these services. "Fortunately, we received a grant from the state of Arizona Housing Department," Galindo-Elvira told FOX 10 Phoenix. Along with state funding, the city also contributed substantial seed money to ensure the project's success.

The shelter's design includes dorm-style housing and 80 private units created from converted shipping containers, according to 12 News. This innovative use of space reflects a commitment to providing safe and dignified accommodations for those in need. With the completion of the Navigation Center, Phoenix has added over 1,200 beds in three years to the local inventory for the homeless community.

The residents of the center can access meals and personal property storage, as well as immediate employment opportunities through the St. Vincent de Paul program. "We know that work is dignity," said Galindo-Elvira to FOX 10 Phoenix. In a testament to the center's impact, a resident named Vance, who has been staying there since November after experiencing homelessness, acknowledges the help he received. "Very grateful for it. It's helped me out and given me a place to live," Vance told FOX 10 Phoenix.
