The New York Attorney General's Office has launched an investigation into a fatal incident in Suffolk County involving an off-duty MTA police officer. The officer, who was driving his personal vehicle at the time, struck and killed a pedestrian last Saturday. The accident took place on Route 110 and Francine Avenue in North Amityville, where the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Under the state's Executive Law Section 70-b, the Attorney General's Office of Special Investigation (OSI) examines incidents where police or peace officers may be implicated in a civilian's death, whether they are on-duty or off-duty, and regardless of whether the deceased was armed or in custody. The OSI's assessment found that the officer may have been responsible for the death, which now requires a full investigation, according to an announcement from the AG's office.
These early revelations come with a caveat from the Attorney General's press release: "These are preliminary facts and subject to change." The investigation is still ongoing. To stay informed on this developing story, the Attorney General’s office encourages the public to follow updates through its official channels. The original press release regarding the investigation can be found on the New York Attorney General’s website.
