Amidst layoffs affecting federal workers, New York Governor Kathy Hochul is taking notable steps to provide support and employment opportunities. ABC7NY reports that Governor Hochul will be hosting a roundtable discussion at her Third Avenue office today, geared toward addressing the concerns of federal employees affected by the recent budget cuts instigated by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Only a day before, Hochul took time to visit St. Mary's Hospital for Children in Queens to demonstrate against the proposed slashes in federal Medicaid funding. According to the governor, witnessing the impact firsthand should be a requisite experience for lawmakers considering such decisions. "I think every Republican member of Congress who claims to represent New York State should come to St. Mary's. Look in the eyes of these kids, listen to their voices, talk to their parents and then see if you can go back to Washington and cut this program. I bet you cannot," Hochul told ABC7NY.
Parallel to Hochul's efforts, Senator Chuck Schumer has spoken out against the closure of Social Security offices in New York and Long Island. As reported by ABC7NY, Schumer has criticized Elon Musk for his remarks about the Social Security agency, amidst the administration's plans to cut its workforce significantly from 57,000 down to approximately 50,000 workers.
Expanding upon these outreach attempts, The Hill noted that the Governor's office has launched a campaign to attract laid-off federal employees with a digital ad in Washington, D.C.’s Union Station. The ad speaks directly to the employees: “DOGE said you’re fired? We say you’re hired! New York wants you!” Eloquently summarizing her stance, Hochul said, “Here in New York we don’t vilify public servants, we value them and their efforts. So when DOGE says ‘You’re fired,’ New York is ready to say ‘You’re hired’ – and we’re making sure talented, experienced federal workers know about the many opportunities available in our state workforce,” she told The Hill.
While Hochul battles layoffs in New York, Republican governors elsewhere are embracing DOGE's cost-cutting measures. Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis has recently indicated plans to adopt similar strategies within his state. Meanwhile, Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin has praised the efficiency efforts but also highlighted his "Virginia has jobs initiative" to provide a fallback for workers losing their federal positions, as detailed by The Hill.
