A year has passed since the tragic death of Imam Hassan Sharif, a revered community leader and Imam of the Masjid Muhammad mosque in Newark, New Jersey. Sharif was shot multiple times outside his mosque before morning prayers on January 3, 2024, and later succumbed to his injuries at Newark's University Hospital. In a continued effort to solve this heartbreaking crime, authorities have released new surveillance footage which they hope might lead to the identification of a person of interest, thanks to his "distinctive walk." The Gothamist reported on the latest development in the case.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office and the Newark Public Safety Department emphasized yesterday the significance of the video, showing the person of interest walking in the vicinity of the mosque on the evening of the murder. The man in the footage was clothed in black pants and a hoodie that effectively concealed his face. "We have been working tirelessly to find those responsible, but we need the community's help," Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens was quoted saying by the Gothamist. A sizable reward of up to $35,000 is now being offered for information that can finally help to securely arrest the perpetrator.
Sharif, who had been a transportation safety officer at Newark Airport since 2006, had survived an attack earlier in August 2024, which he described in a Facebook post. He was an individual who dedicated his life to serving others, and his mosque served as a beacon of hope by offering a "safe surrender" spot for fugitives to turn themselves in peacefully. Those who knew him remembered his staunch belief in helping people. According to ABC7NY, officials have ruled out domestic terrorism as a motive for the shooting.
Authorities are urging anyone who may have information, no matter how insignificant it might seem, to come forward and contact the Newark Police Department.
